DOSSIER / RESEARCH

Methods and measurement.

A number without a method behind it is a marketing claim. These are the posts about where the numbers come from.

Privacy reporting has a credibility problem, and most of it is self-inflicted. Counts get quoted without saying what was counted, studies get cited for conclusions they did not draw, and store-page privacy labels are treated as verified facts when they are developer self-declarations.

The posts here deal with methodology: how tracker counts are built and where they break, what the academic literature actually found, and what consent frameworks do and do not change. The quarterly research editions carry the larger data sets.

Common questions

From on-device analysis of the installed packages themselves, aggregated across scans. That means the corpus reflects the apps people actually run rather than a scripted crawl of store listings, which is a strength for relevance and a limit for coverage. Both are worth stating.
